Tompkins Graduate Debuts Children’s Book to Showcase Sign Language, Disabilities as ‘Superpowers’

Summarized by Jessica Brannan

From Katy, Texas, recent college grad Shay Abigail has been inspired to work with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community ever since meeting a young deaf girl while she was still in high school. After getting her BA in American Sign Language – Teaching and Interpreting, Abigail is now set on spreading that inspiration and awareness to others.

Through her children’s book, My Name is Maya, Abigail wants kids to learn that being unique is awesome, and that we don’t have to be afraid of those who are different. Maya, the main character of the story, is a deaf girl who shows the readers that deafness and sign language can be a ‘superpower’!
