Students, Teachers Work through New Challenges

Reading lips can be vital for Deaf and Hard of Hearing when trying to communicate, which is why wearing masks makes communication extra difficult right now.  Teachers in Independence, Missouri, admit that teaching has been challenging during the pandemic.

Many of the hard of hearing students have struggled with speech therapy, but they’re adapting, and they find ways to let their teachers know when they need assistance. Many use sign language, although even sign language relies on facial expression.

Some teachers wear clear face shields or clear masks, and that helps. In addition, technology has made communication much easier during a time when people might otherwise feel completely isolated. Between hearing aids and digital technology, many students are succeeding in their studies.
