Families with deaf, non-verbal children start new educational support group

Summarized by Rachel Cain, staff writer

Kimberley Churchill founded CLASS- “Children’s Language Acquisition Support System“ to help other families and parents like herself access resources for their children who are deaf, hard of hearing, or non-verbal in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Churchill’s 7-year-old son is deaf. She started the organization because her family has had much more difficulty securing access and education for him than with their hearing son.

“It’s a huge difference,” she said. “My older son Hunter, when he’s in school he has full inclusion in his education system. With Carter, it’s completely opposite. We have had to fight every single year for him to have access.”

CLASS also enables families in similar situations to network and learn from each other.
