Kids at the American School for the Deaf Feel the Beat and Move Their Feet

Summarized by Jeni Ten Eyck, staff writer

Kym Nash, owner of FarmingtonDANCE, turns up the base so that her deaf students can feel the music.

Her students, who have various levels of hearing and many of whom attend the American School for the Deaf, use the vibrations the sound makes to literally feel the beat. Nash altered the acoustics so that the bass would create the vibrations without making the noise unbearable for herself.

Her students’ attention to the beat of the music and eye contact with herself and/or the interpreter, keep the students in perfect coordination with each other. They are some of her most determined and focused students, who also happen to be very talented.
