Deaf 13-year-old gymnast hopes to compete in 2020 Olympics
Thirteen-year-old Mykenzie Pfeiffer, who is deaf, hopes to represent the United States on the gymnastics team during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Pfeiffer lost her hearing as a toddler due to an enlarged vestibular aqueduct. This meant the fluid in her inner ear would flow back and forth rather than one direction.
She has cochlear implants, but choose not to use them when she performs.
“I do it without hearing the music,” Pfeiffer said. “My coach claps when the music comes on.”
