Colts Cheerleader Learns Sign Language to Reach Deaf Fan Base
Vanessa is a cheerleader for the Indianapolis Colts football team. She recently returned to school to continue her education in American Sign Language.
A young girl had come to a Colts training camp in 2019, and the girl was signing to her father. Vanessa used ASL to say hello to the girl and to ask her name, but she didn’t know much beyond that. This inspired her to continue to learn ASL.
Vanessa also feels that COVID-19 has made communication more difficult for the Deaf community because of masks. She wants to bring her community together by learning ASL and using it during games.
